Back then, climbing the corporate ladder was considered an admirable pursuit, while families watched their exhausted breadwinners with longing. Pictures became the only way to recall the details of tired faces and determine whether Dad had blue eyes or brown.
In the pursuit of higher positions, large companies relocated employees like chess pieces, from one city to another. Chicago to Boston, New York to Tokyo—the constant moves disrupted family life. As a result, divorce rates soared, fathers lost touch with their loved ones, and the incidence of heart attacks and strokes among these men became alarmingly high. Retirement only exacerbated the feeling of uselessness and lack of productivity.
Over time, these men had become so intertwined with their work identities that they struggled to define themselves outside of their careers. Retirees found themselves questioning their purpose and living with strangers who were once their partners. The precious memories of their children seemed distant, fading away like a forgotten dream.
As women entered the workforce in full force, they too joined the rat race. However, it’s important to note that the rat race is far from over. Stress-related deaths and illnesses continue to rise, employees are working longer hours both in the U.S. and globally, divorce rates are skyrocketing, and single-parent families are becoming more prevalent.
Furthermore, many of us find ourselves responsible for the care of aging parents on top of our own demanding lives. Despite living in a world filled with conveniences that were meant to provide leisure time, we seem to have only gained more hours for work due to the overwhelming information overload, relentless technology, and media bombardment.
It’s not uncommon for individuals to work an average of sixty to seventy hours per week, with some even pushing themselves to eighty or ninety hours without flinching. Yet, in the midst of this hectic existence, we deceive ourselves into believing that we have a life.
Finding balance in life is crucial for our overall well-being and fulfillment. It’s time to reassess our priorities, reclaim our time, and rediscover the true essence of living.
