Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian physical education professor, is credited with inventing basketball and outlining its foundational rules. Interestingly, Naismith drew inspiration from the children’s game “Duck On A Rock,” incorporating some of its rules into basketball’s early framework in 1891. Surprisingly, the inception of women’s basketball can be traced to Smith College, where Senda Berenson founded the first women’s team in 1893. Thus, women’s basketball found its roots before men’s teams took shape.
Intriguingly, basketball rapidly gained popularity, captivating enthusiasts in YMCA establishments, high schools, and beyond, both in the United States and Canada. College leagues emerged before World War I, but they soon disbanded. However, by the 1950s, college basketball had become a prominent sport on campuses, capturing the hearts of students and fans alike.
