However, like many pioneers, Mesmer’s theories were later discredited. He proposed a concept called “animal magnetism,” believing in the existence of a magnetic fluid flowing from the operator to the patient, imbued with miraculous healing powers. Yet, subsequent followers of Mesmer convincingly demonstrated that there was no tangible magnetic current at play. Instead, they revealed that the true force behind hypnotism was mental suggestion.
