In Zen practice, even the sensation of legs going numb during sitting meditation is viewed as an opportunity for introspection and understanding. There’s a saying that describes this numbness as “a fire that begins in your toes and consumes your whole body,” highlighting the transformative potential of such experiences.
An ancient inquiry in Zen asks practitioners if they can achieve a level of bodily relaxation akin to that of a baby. This state of relaxation becomes apparent even when legs and feet experience numbness, revealing unexpected flexibility in the ankles and feet.
During one memorable Dokusan session with Zen Master Reverend Dr. Soyu Matsuoka-roshi, both legs went completely numb by the end of the meditation period. As I rose, my feet buzzed intensely inside my socks, and I stumbled towards the altar, momentarily unable to feel my steps. This moment, though startling, was a lesson in mindfulness and presence, guided by the compassionate support of Sensei.
