The Ocarina of Time Remake And Potential Changes/Retcons

Nintendo’s upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake has finally given fans a glimpse of its new visual direction, but the brief footage has raised almost as many questions as it answered.

The biggest issue is Link himself. The first footage showed him sleeping in a dark room, making it difficult to judge how the new character model will actually look during gameplay. Fans will need to see Link moving through Hyrule before the visual style can really be assessed.

There is also the question of how much Nintendo is changing. Will this remain a largely faithful recreation with modern controls and visuals, or will Nintendo expand the original with redesigned dungeons, new areas and restored content? A balance between preservation and meaningful improvements could be the ideal approach.

The gameplay itself needs attention too. Ocarina of Time pioneered many 3D action-adventure mechanics, but its original camera, movement and item management have not aged particularly well. A modern control system would make a huge difference, especially for players coming from Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

Hyrule will be another major test. The original world felt enormous on the N64, but modern Zelda games have dramatically changed expectations for scale and visual detail. Seeing Hyrule Field rebuilt with modern technology could be one of the remake’s biggest showcases.

Then there are the smaller questions. Will Navi remain just as persistent? Why is Link apparently sleeping in what looks like armor? And, perhaps most importantly, are players really going back into Jabu-Jabu without significant improvements?

The upcoming Zelda movie also adds another layer of speculation. With the film scheduled for April next year, fans are already wondering whether the remake could share any connections with Nintendo’s cinematic plans.

Finally, Nintendo still needs to reveal exactly who is developing the remake and when we will see substantial gameplay. A dedicated Nintendo Direct would answer many of these questions, and with the remake expected this year, that reveal cannot be too far away.

For now, Ocarina of Time fans are left with plenty to speculate about. The remake has the opportunity to modernize one of gaming’s most important adventures, but Nintendo still has a lot to show before anyone knows exactly how far this remake is going.
